Trump Claims Deal Near, Iran Says Key Terms Not Agreed Yet

Trump said Iran must permanently give up any nuclear weapons program, immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz with no tolls or restrictions, and allow free shipping traffic in both directions.

He also said remaining sea mines in the Strait would be removed, claiming the US had already destroyed many of them and that Iran would eliminate any mines still left.

Trump further stated that ships affected by what he called a US naval blockade could begin heading home once the blockade is lifted.

He claimed Iran’s enriched nuclear material, which he referred to as “nuclear dust,” would be excavated from underground sites and destroyed in coordination with Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the United States.

Trump also said no money would be exchanged under the arrangement until further notice and that several other less important issues had already been agreed upon. He added that he was heading to the Situation Room to make a final determination.

However, Iran’s Fars News Agency, citing informed sources, says Trump is exaggerating or misrepresenting the status of the negotiations and that no final agreement has been reached.

According to Fars, Iran has not agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for unrestricted shipping and has not agreed to destroy its nuclear material, rejecting those claims as false.

Fars says the talks are based on a “commitment for commitment” formula, meaning both sides must fulfill obligations before further steps are taken.

The report says Iran’s key demands include the immediate release of $12 billion in blocked Iranian funds and a complete ceasefire in Lebanon that aligns with Hezbollah’s position.

Only after those issues are resolved would Iran discuss sanctions relief, the nuclear file, and other outstanding matters with the United States.

Fars says Trump is attempting to present the negotiations as a US victory, while Iran insists any deal must respect its red lines and warns it would respond immediately if Washington fails to honor its commitments.

Update: Iran Says No Final Deal Yet, Rejects Trump’s Demands

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said negotiations with the United States are still ongoing and no final text or memorandum of understanding has been completed. Tehran also said it has not made any commitments on nuclear issues at this stage.

Responding to Trump’s latest comments, Iran said any announcement about lifting the naval blockade must be proven through actions, not statements. Tehran added that no one can tell Iran what it “must” do, and said management of the Strait of Hormuz is a matter for Iran and Oman, while ships must coordinate with Iran before passing through the waterway.

Update: New York Post reports a key obstacle to a US-Iran interim peace deal is releasing Qatar’s $6bn escrow in phases. A government official says talks are closest to an agreement on a final memorandum of understanding, though a signing timeline remains unclear.

The New York Times reports Trump’s two-hour meeting with US officials yielded no agreement with Iran. The administration states a deal is near, though key issues like unfreezing Iranian funds remain under discussion.
