India has crossed the 300 GW non-fossil fuel capacity milestone, with total installed capacity reaching 300.50 GW as of 31 July 2026, according to the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The figure represents more than 60% of the 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target set for 2030. Non-fossil sources now account for more than 54% of India’s total electricity generation capacity, which stands at around 552 GW.
India 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity: Solar Leads
Solar power remains the largest contributor to India’s non-fossil fuel capacity, with 164.59 GW installed as of 31 July 2026. Wind power accounts for 58.14 GW, while hydro power, including large and small hydro, contributes 57.24 GW. Bio-power stands at 11.75 GW, and nuclear power accounts for 8.78 GW, taking the total non-fossil fuel capacity to 300.50 GW.
The growth has been particularly strong in solar and wind power over the past decade. Solar capacity has increased to around 165 GW, compared with just 2.8 GW in 2014. Wind power capacity has also risen to more than 58 GW, from 21 GW in 2014.
India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity during 2025-26. Solar power accounted for 44.6 GW of the additions, while wind power contributed 6 GW during the financial year.
The increase in installed capacity has also been accompanied by higher renewable electricity generation. Renewable energy generation rose from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26, according to government data released by PIB on 09 AUG 2026 at 2:31 PM.
India has also expanded domestic manufacturing capacity to support the growth of its renewable energy sector. The capacity listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for Solar PV Modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014. The government has supported domestic manufacturing through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, focusing on high-efficiency, indigenously produced solar modules.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is also implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission to support the production, use and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The latest milestone puts India at 300.50 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, taking the country beyond 60% of its 500 GW target for 2030.
