New Core Industries Index Series to Replace 2011-12 Base from July 20

The Office of Economic Adviser (OEA) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will release the revised Index of Core Industries (ICI) series with the new base year of 2022-23 on July 20, 2026, at 5:00 PM. The revised series will replace the existing ICI series based on 2011-12.

The release will include the provisional Index of Core Industries for June 2026 along with the back series covering the period from April 2023 to May 2026, comprising 38 months of data. The ICI is compiled and released every month.

The revised ICI series has been aligned with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) 2022-23 series released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The weights for the ICI have been derived from the IIP weights and redistributed on a pro-rata basis so that the final ICI basket totals 100.

The revised series expands the number of core industries from eight to nine with the inclusion of Iron Ore, reflecting its extensive use in industrial production and its significant contribution to industrial development.

To maintain consistency with the IIP, the revised ICI series will use gross production data for compiling the Steel Index instead of the net production data used in the 2011–12 series. In the Coal sector, only Raw Coal has been retained, while Coal Middlings and Washed Coal have been excluded to eliminate double counting, as both are derived from Raw Coal.
