India’s overall labour market remained broadly stable in June 2026, with the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR) and Unemployment Rate (UR) largely unchanged from the previous month, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) Monthly Bulletin released on July 15. Urban labour indicators showed marginal improvement, while the rural unemployment rate softened slightly.
The overall LFPR for people aged 15 years and above stood at 54.4% in June 2026, unchanged from May and slightly higher than 54.2% recorded a year earlier. Rural LFPR remained steady at 56.6%, while urban LFPR rose to 50.1% from 49.8% in May. Female LFPR was 32.7%, compared with 32.8% in May, and remained 0.7 percentage points higher than the 32.0% recorded in June 2025.
The overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR) remained unchanged at 51.4% in June 2026, up 0.2 percentage points from 51.2% a year earlier. Rural WPR stayed at 53.8%, while urban WPR edged up to 46.8% from 46.6% in May. Male WPR increased to 72.9% from 72.5% in the previous month and remained broadly stable compared with 72.8% in June 2025.
India’s overall unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above remained at 5.5% in June, unchanged from May. Rural unemployment eased to 5.0% from 5.1%, while urban unemployment increased slightly to 6.6% from 6.4%. Compared with June 2025, urban unemployment declined from 7.1% to 6.6%, while the overall and rural unemployment rates remained broadly stable.
The survey also noted that rural male unemployment declined in June 2026 after rising continuously since February and stayed below the level recorded in the corresponding month of the previous year. The monthly estimates were based on information collected from 372,852 people across India, including 212,390 in rural areas and 160,462 in urban areas.
