India’s Union Cabinet has approved the continuation and integration of two major food distribution schemes under a new umbrella program called SARTHAK PDS. The scheme will run until March 31, 2031.
The Central Government will spend Rs 25,530 crore over the next five years as its share to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and improve food grain delivery across the country.
SARTHAK PDS combines two existing schemes: assistance for intra state transport and handling of food grains along with Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealer margins, and the SMART PDS technology modernization program.
The government has also revised the norms for Central assistance to states and Union Territories for transporting and handling food grains within states, while continuing support for FPS dealer commissions.
The scheme aims to ensure smooth last mile delivery of subsidized food grains, reduce leakages, improve efficiency, and provide better services to beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
SARTHAK PDS will use advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Blockchain for real time monitoring, grievance redressal, analytics, and better management of the food distribution network.
The plan includes creating unified databases, standardized digital systems, State Command and Control Centres, and ISO certified processes to improve transparency, security, and accountability in PDS operations.
The scheme is expected to benefit around 81.35 crore people covered under NFSA and builds on earlier reforms such as digitized ration cards, Aadhaar seeding, e-PoS machines at ration shops, online allocation systems, and nationwide computerized supply chain management.
