The White House announced that Vice President JD Vance and the US negotiating delegation will not travel to Pakistan on Tuesday after President Donald Trump decided to extend the ceasefire with Iran.
This move comes as the US waits for a “unified proposal” from Tehran. The White House did not provide any further clarity on the possibility or timing of in-person negotiations.
President Trump said the ceasefire extension was made at the request of Pakistan’s leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, citing ongoing efforts to bring Iran to the table.
Trump stated that Iran’s leadership remains internally divided and has not yet presented a unified position. He said the US will delay military action but continue applying pressure.
Despite the ceasefire extension, Trump confirmed that the US military will maintain its blockade of Iranian ports and remain fully prepared for combat if talks collapse.
The situation remains uncertain as the two-week ceasefire was set to expire Wednesday. Both sides have indicated they are ready to resume fighting if no agreement is reached.
Iran has not confirmed participation in further talks in Pakistan. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tehran will only join negotiations if there is confidence in meaningful outcomes.
In a separate statement, Trump said Iran wants the Strait of Hormuz open to avoid losing about $500 million per day. He claimed Iran publicly calls for closure only to “save face” while privately seeking reopening.
Trump also warned that reopening the Strait without a deal would make any agreement impossible unless the US takes extreme military action, reaffirming that the blockade will continue until talks conclude.
Reacting sharply, an advisor to Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Trump’s decision “makes no sense” and is an attempt to buy time for a surprise attack.
The advisor added that Iran currently holds the initiative and warned that the continued US blockade is equivalent to bombardment and must be met with a military response.
He further stated that the ceasefire extension “means nothing” and that a losing side cannot dictate terms to Iran.
Meanwhile, Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro said Iran-related geopolitical risk has acted as a hidden tax on global oil prices.
Navarro added that removing this risk could significantly lower global energy prices for years if stability is restored.
