Typhoon Shanshan Approaches Southern Japan, Bringing Threat of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

A powerful typhoon named Shanshan is moving towards southern Japan and is expected to cause severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds, later this week.

Forecast and Warnings

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Typhoon Shanshan is likely to cross the Amami islands on Wednesday. It is expected to bring gusts of wind reaching speeds of up to 216 kilometers per hour (135 miles per hour). After passing the Amami islands, the typhoon is predicted to move towards Kyushu, the main island in southern Japan.

Shuichi Tachihara, a JMA forecaster, mentioned that the typhoon could cause “violent storms” and “high waves” from Tuesday through Friday. In Miyazaki, a region in Kyushu, around 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain is expected within 24 hours starting from Wednesday noon. This could lead to flooding and other rain-related issues.

Impact on Transportation

The typhoon is also likely to disrupt transportation across the region. Satoshi Omatsu, an official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, warned that railways, flights, and highway traffic could face delays or cancellations due to the severe weather.

In preparation, Japan Airlines announced on Monday that they will cancel 39 domestic flights on Tuesday. They also plan to cancel 77 domestic flights and six international flights on Wednesday because of the typhoon.

Recent Weather Events

Typhoon Shanshan is the latest in a series of storms affecting Japan. Earlier this month, Typhoon Ampil caused significant disruption, leading to the cancellation of many flights and train services. Although Ampil brought heavy rain, it resulted in only minor injuries and damages as it passed by the Tokyo region.

Before that, Tropical Storm Maria caused record rainfall in northern Japan, leading to floods and other weather-related problems.

Residents and travelers in the affected areas are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take precautions as Typhoon Shanshan approaches.
