Trump Meeting Lasts Over 2 Hours as Both Leaders Push “Best Ever” US China Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping said China wants stable, healthy and long term relations with the United States after holding talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing on May 14. He said both sides agreed to build a “constructive strategic stable relationship.”

Xi said the new framework should focus on cooperation while keeping competition under control. He added that differences between both countries must remain manageable and should not damage peace.

Xi stressed that the agreement is not just a slogan and both sides must take real and reciprocal actions. He said China and the U.S. should properly implement the key understandings reached during the meeting.

Xi also called for stronger political, diplomatic and military communication between both countries. He said better communication can help avoid misunderstandings and improve overall ties.

The Chinese leader pushed for more cooperation in trade, agriculture, health, tourism, law enforcement and people to people exchanges. He said broader cooperation would benefit both nations.

Xi and Trump also discussed major global issues including the Middle East conflict, the Ukraine war and tensions on the Korean Peninsula during their talks in Beijing.

Both leaders agreed to support each other in hosting this year’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Summit, signaling continued engagement on global platforms.

Trump said he was honored to visit China and described U.S.-China relations as positive. He said he and Xi share the strongest and longest relationship between leaders of both countries.

Trump called Xi a great leader and said China is a great country. He added that he respects Xi and the Chinese people and described the meeting as globally important.

Trump said he wants to work closely with Xi to improve communication, manage differences and build what he called “the best U.S.-China relationship in history” for a better future for both nations.

China’s Xi Jinping told top US CEOs traveling with Donald Trump in Beijing that China will further open its economy to foreign businesses. According to CCTV, Xi said American companies have already benefited from China’s reforms and added that “China’s door to the outside world will only open wider.”

Executives attending the meeting included Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Kelly Ortberg and Jensen Huang. Xi’s comments also echoed Trump’s push for China to “open up” more to US businesses and investment.

Elon Musk said the Xi Trump meeting was “very smooth” and added that “a lot of good things are happening.” Jensen Huang also said the talks were going well, while Tim Cook smiled and gave a thumbs up and peace sign outside the venue, according to U.S. media reports.

Meanwhile, as per various media reports, the U.S. Commerce Department approved around 10 Chinese companies including Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance and JD.com to buy Nvidia H200 AI chips under licensing deals of up to 75,000 chips per customer.

Despite approvals, no shipments have started yet as Chinese firms reportedly slowed purchases after pressure from Beijing and rising concerns over dependence on foreign AI technology. China is instead accelerating support for domestic chip makers like Huawei.

The delay highlights continuing U.S.-China tech tensions even as Jensen Huang joined the U.S. delegation in Beijing to push forward chip export deals and improve technology cooperation.
