On 9 July 2026, during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia, India and Australia announced 18 key outcomes covering defence, security, energy, technology, education, research and critical infrastructure. The agreements aim to deepen cooperation across strategic and economic sectors.
A renewed Joint Declaration on Defense and Security Cooperation (JDDSC) updates the 2009 declaration, expanding cooperation in maritime security, cyber security, defence industry, counter-terrorism and technology. The two countries also unveiled a Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap (MSCR), reaffirmed their Joint Statement on Energy Security, finalised the administrative arrangement for the 2014 India-Australia Civil Nuclear Agreement, and launched the Australia-India Partnership for Cyber, Critical Technologies and Supply Chains (PACTS).
The leaders also signed an MoU between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Australia’s Maritime Border Command (MBC), while Australia invited an Indian military instructor to serve at the Australian Defence College in 2028-29. Defence cooperation will also expand through maritime law enforcement, operational coordination and technology collaboration.
Education, skills and innovation featured strongly in the outcomes. India and Australia’s TAFE Western Australia will establish a Centre of Excellence in Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) at NSTI Bhubaneswar. Flinders University received a Letter of Intent to open its Bengaluru campus, Victoria University was approved to establish a campus in Gurugram, and vocational education regulators signed an LoI to strengthen quality standards and workforce development.
The two countries also signed agreements on science, research and technology, including cooperation between CSIR and the University of Melbourne, GeoScience Australia and the Geological Survey of India (GSI), access to the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL) for IP Australia, collaboration between SRFTI Kolkata and Griffith Film School, and an MoU under the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership.
Other outcomes included the return of 3 Indian antiquities—the sacred bull Nandi, Trident with Auspicious Kali (Bhadrakali) and the six-headed Skanda (Kartikeya)—and the operationalisation of the Rooftop Solar Training Academy at Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Gandhinagar, which aims to train 2,000 women and youth as solar technicians and installers.
