Indian Railways transported 142.21 million tonnes (MT) of freight in June 2026, up 4% from 136.71 MT in June 2025. Freight earnings also rose 3%, generating an additional ₹430 crore compared with the same month last year.
Among key commodities, fertilizer loading jumped 19.1%, Balance Other Goods increased 17.3%, iron ore rose 9.4%, clinker grew 7.2%, domestic coal increased 4.9%, and total coal loading was up 3.6%.
During the April-June quarter of FY2026-27, Indian Railways carried 419.08 MT of freight, compared with 413.05 MT a year earlier. Quarterly iron ore loading rose 7.44%, clinker 6.54%, and Balance & Other Goods 12.16%.
To meet higher electricity demand during the summer, Indian Railways supplied 7% more domestic coal to thermal power plants in June compared with the same month last year.
Passenger traffic also increased during June. Indian Railways carried 63.81 crore passengers, up from 62.37 crore a year ago. The non-suburban segment grew 3.9% to 30.04 crore passengers from 28.90 crore, while the suburban segment rose 0.9% to 33.77 crore from 33.46 crore.
Railways also expanded its premium train network. The country now has 164 Vande Bharat services, including the new Howrah-Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper, and 72 Amrit Bharat services after the launch of four new trains in June 2026.
