India recorded 21% below normal Southwest Monsoon rainfall as of July 14, 2026, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Ministry of Earth Sciences said rainfall during the initial weeks of the 2026 monsoon season has been lower than normal in several parts of the country, although some regions have received normal or above-normal rainfall.
The IMD said rainfall is monitored daily, weekly and seasonally against the Long Period Average (LPA). It noted that monsoon rainfall naturally varies across regions and over time, resulting in deficient rainfall in some meteorological subdivisions and normal or excess rainfall in others.
The government said the impact of rainfall on agriculture, water resources, drinking water and groundwater is being assessed by the concerned Ministries and State Governments. At present, there is no indication of any nationwide impact on food grain production.
The IMD continues to monitor rainfall distribution and issues regular weather forecasts and warnings to help administrative authorities take necessary operational measures. The assessment and declaration of drought or flood situations remain the responsibility of the respective State Governments in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The government is also strengthening weather forecasting under the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ flagship Mission Mausam programme. The mission aims to improve weather observations, enhance understanding of atmospheric processes, and develop advanced numerical models to deliver more accurate weather forecasts.
