Russia has announced joint naval exercises named “Maritime Security Belt – 2024” in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, involving collaboration with Iran and China. The practical phase of these drills, set to commence on Tuesday, will actively engage warships and aviation, as reported by Iran’s state news agency, IRNA.
The Russian Defense Ministry emphasizes that the primary goal of these maneuvers is to enhance the safety of maritime economic activities in the region. The collaborative efforts aim to strengthen international maritime trade security, combat piracy, counter maritime terrorism, and facilitate information exchange for maritime rescue operations.
The naval grouping, led by the missile cruiser Varyag from the Pacific Fleet, includes participation from Iranian and Chinese forces. Additionally, observers from the navies of Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Oman, India, and South Africa are expected to partake in these joint naval exercises.
These exercises go beyond addressing security concerns; they also focus on exchanging operational and tactical insights among the participating nations. This collaborative effort underscores the vital role of cooperation in preserving stability and safety in international waters.
