China’s Population Declines for Third Consecutive Year in 2024

China’s population shrank for the third straight year in 2024 as deaths continued to outpace births, with experts predicting a sharper decline in the years to come. This marks a pivotal demographic shift in the world’s most populous country, raising concerns about its long-term economic and social impact.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s population fell by 1.39 million, dropping from 1.409 billion in 2023 to 1.408 billion in 2024. The decline is driven by a combination of low birth rates and an aging population.

Births See Slight Increase, But Not Enough to Offset Deaths

The number of births in 2024 rose slightly to 9.54 million, up from 9.02 million in 2023. This led to a modest increase in the birth rate, which rose to 6.77 births per 1,000 people from 6.39 per 1,000 in the previous year. However, this uptick was overshadowed by a high number of deaths, with 10.93 million people passing away in 2024—only slightly lower than the 11.1 million recorded in 2023.

Experts Warn of Accelerating Decline

Demographers caution that China’s population decline is set to accelerate as the effects of decades of low fertility rates and an aging society become more pronounced. The government has attempted to reverse this trend by introducing policies to encourage higher birth rates, such as offering financial incentives and easing restrictions on family size. However, these measures have so far had limited success.

Implications for China’s Future

The population decline poses significant challenges for China’s economy, particularly in sustaining its workforce, supporting an aging population, and maintaining long-term economic growth. As the trend continues, the pressure to adapt will likely intensify for policymakers.

China’s shrinking population highlights the urgent need for effective solutions to address the demographic imbalance and its far-reaching consequences.
