India-US Trade Deal 99% Done, Final Agreement Expected Soon

The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, said the India-US trade agreement is almost complete and is now in its final stages. Speaking at the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, he said around 98-99% of the deal has been finalised, with only a few issues left for both sides. He added that the agreement is beneficial for both countries and he hopes it will be completed soon.

Gor said India and the US are finding new areas to work together almost every day, including artificial intelligence, technology and defence. He said the partnership has huge potential and both countries are committed to building a win-win relationship. He also said the US Embassy in New Delhi helped bring $20.5 billion in new investments this year.

He said the Quad meeting involving India, the US, Japan and Australia is expected to take place in the Philippines in about two weeks. The four countries will discuss regional security, including maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, and aim to make such meetings more regular.

Speaking about his discussion with President Donald Trump, Gor said they spoke about his recent visits to India and the growing trade relationship between the two countries. He said businesses from both nations are expanding investments and trade, while negotiations on the trade deal continue because they involve thousands of products and legal issues.

USISPF Senior Advisor Al Mason said Ambassador Gor played an important role in rebuilding ties between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a difficult period. He said Gor conveyed that Trump respects India’s rise, admires Modi’s leadership and wants a stronger bilateral relationship. Mason also said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit India later this year, while President Trump may visit India next year, showing renewed momentum in India-US ties.

On Trump’s possible India visit, Gor said there are no plans during the US midterm election period, but both sides want the visit to happen as early as possible. He also said Rubio has invited PM Modi to the US, while Modi has invited Trump to India. Gor added that Rubio is expected to visit India in December for the G20, and both countries are working to further strengthen cooperation.
