India’s Retail Inflation Rises to 4.38% in June, Food Inflation Hits 5.32%

India’s retail inflation accelerated to 4.38% in June 2026 from 3.93% in May, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on July 13. Food inflation also moved higher, with the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) rising to 5.32% in June from 4.78% in the previous month.

The year-on-year Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation stood at 4.74% in rural areas and 3.92% in urban areas, while food inflation was 5.45% in rural India and 5.09% in urban India. The combined CPI index increased to 107.00 in June from 105.91 in May, while the combined CFPI index rose to 107.15 from 105.35.

Among major divisions, Personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services recorded the highest inflation at 16.72%, followed by Restaurants and accommodation services at 6.91%, Food and beverages at 5.05%, Paan, tobacco and intoxicants at 4.83%, Transport at 4.31%, Education services at 3.34%, and Clothing and footwear at 3.23%. Inflation remained lower in Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels at 1.99%, Health at 1.42%, and Information and communication at 0.43%.

The five items with the lowest inflation in June were Potato (-20.34%), Peas (-9.67%), Motor car and jeep (-6.89%), Cumin (Jeera) (-3.75%), and Motor cycle and scooter (-3.49%). The highest inflation was recorded in Silver Jewellery (133.21%), followed by Ginger (50.41%), Gold, Diamond and Platinum Jewellery (36.82%), Tomato (31.92%), and Raisin (Kishmish) and Monacca (20.52%).

Housing inflation stood at 2.10% in June 2026, with 2.66% inflation in rural areas and 1.90% in urban areas. Within major expenditure groups, Food inflation was 5.32%, Beverages 0.15%, Services for processing primary goods for food 3.35%, Alcoholic beverages 2.67%, Paan and tobacco 6.89%, Clothing 3.64%, and Footwear 0.54%.

Among states and Union Territories, Telangana recorded the highest combined CPI inflation at 6.36%, followed by Andhra Pradesh (5.39%), Puducherry (5.39%), Tamil Nadu (5.24%), Odisha (5.15%), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (5.08%), and Madhya Pradesh (5.09%). Other major states included Kerala (4.34%), Karnataka (4.80%), Maharashtra (3.81%), Gujarat (4.01%), West Bengal (3.95%), Uttar Pradesh (4.56%), Delhi (2.96%), and Bihar (3.28%).

The response rate for price collection was 100% in both rural and urban markets during June 2026. Real-time price data were collected from 1,407 urban markets, including online markets, and 1,465 villages across all States and Union Territories through the National Statistical Office’s Field Operations Division.
