India Expands Infrastructure Dashboard to 165 Indicators in Q1 Update

India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on July 16 released the quarterly update of the PAIMANA (Project Assessment, Infrastructure Monitoring & Analytics for Nation-building) Performance Monitoring Dashboard, expanding its coverage to 165 infrastructure indicators. The latest update adds 44 new indicators using the most recent data received from respective ministries and departments, while also introducing sector-wise narratives to improve interpretation of infrastructure performance.

The dashboard now tracks 165 indicators across six infrastructure sub-sectors, including Civil Aviation (31), Roads (8), Power (14), Ports, Shipping & Waterways (62), Telecommunications (13) and Railways (37). The quarterly update is aimed at providing timely infrastructure statistics through a single publicly accessible platform.

The Civil Aviation sector recorded cargo movement of 98,920.10 tonnes in April 2026, up 11.8% from April 2025. The number of aerodromes increased to 165, up by 81 since 2014. In FY 2026-27 (up to May), passenger traffic reached 7.1 crore, cargo handled stood at 7.3 lakh tonnes, up 10.6% year-on-year, while 10.52 lakh foreign tourist arrivals were facilitated during April-May FY 2026-27.

The Telecommunications sector reported mobile data consumption of 285,376 petabytes during FY 2025-26, up 24.7% year-on-year. Telephone subscribers increased from 120.17 crore in FY 2024-25 to 133.06 crore in FY 2025-26, while telecom infrastructure expanded to 8.55 lakh towers and 32.25 lakh Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). Tele-density also improved to 93.26% in FY 2025-26. The Road Transport and Highways sector constructed 9,360 km of National Highways during FY 2025-26, while electronic toll collection transactions rose to Rs. 88 crores, up 39.7% year-on-year, in FY 2026-27 (up to May).

Ports, Shipping & Waterways recorded 2.06 crore passenger traffic at non-major ports during FY 2024-25. Coastal cargo handling at major ports increased 3.09% year-on-year to 196,808.7 thousand tonnes, while non-major ports handled 142,219.4 thousand tonnes. India’s fleet expanded to 1,592 vessels in 2025, sea-borne trade nearly doubled from 76 million tonnes in 2015 to 145 million tonnes in 2023, inland water vessel fleet reached 10,623 in 2024-25, and navigable waterways expanded to 29,151.9 km in FY 2024-25.

The Railways sector reported improved freight and passenger performance, with the average carrying capacity of Broad Gauge wagons reaching a record 64.0 tonnes per wagon in 2024-25, compared with 60.8 tonnes in 2015-16. Average daily passengers carried reached 19.98 million in 2024-25, up 5.8% year-on-year, while the rail network expanded to over 1.37 lakh track kilometres. In the Power sector, energy storage requirements are projected to rise more than tenfold, from 87 GWh in 2027-28 to 888 GWh by 2035-36, with Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) capacity expected to reach 94 GW and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity 80 GW by 2035-36. The next quarterly update of the Performance Monitoring Dashboard is scheduled for October 16, 2026.
