Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has gained high-level access to the U.S. Department of Education’s email system. This happened after President Trump announced Musk would oversee changes at the agency.
Concerns Over Data and Job Cuts
Government officials and lawmakers are worried that DOGE members now have access to sensitive data and may be planning to fire federal employees.
NBC News reported that DOGE members Akash Bobba and Ethan Shaotran, both 22 years old, have gained administrator-level access to the department’s email system. Employees also said Shaotran entered the backend of the department’s website, raising security concerns.
Some workers fear that DOGE may misuse student loan data, push out experienced staff, and hurt federal loan collection efforts. Reports show that 16 DOGE members are now listed in the department’s directory.
Legal Battles and Protests
The Education Department has not commented on the issue, but tensions are rising. Employees were offered a resignation package, but those who accept it lose their right to sue if the government does not follow through. The employee union is warning workers not to take the deal, comparing it to Musk’s Twitter layoffs.
A watchdog group called Public Citizen has filed a lawsuit to stop DOGE members from accessing student data, saying it puts 42 million Americans’ personal and financial information at risk.
Meanwhile, 95 House Democrats tried to meet with acting Education Secretary Denise Carter, but security blocked them from entering. This led to protests, with lawmakers calling the move illegal.
New Policies Under DOGE
A new memo was sent out this week, ordering a review of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The goal is to check for “discriminatory practices” and adjust department policies.
As the controversy grows, more legal challenges and government actions are expected in the coming weeks.
