One year has passed since the Air India Flight AI-171 crash involving a Boeing 787-8 aircraft. The flight was travelling from Ahmedabad to London when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on June 12, 2025.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said it continues to investigate the accident under Indian aviation rules and ICAO standards. A preliminary report with factual information was released on July 12, 2025.
Over the past year, investigators have carried out a detailed review of aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine components, maintenance records, operational documents, and other important evidence.
The investigation team has been supported by accredited representatives, technical advisers, and aviation experts from relevant organisations. AAIB said significant progress has been made in examining all available evidence.
The collected evidence is now being analysed in detail. Additional technical assessments and specialist examinations will be conducted wherever needed to ensure all conclusions are based on verified evidence and scientific analysis.
AAIB said the final report will be released after all investigative work and international review processes are completed. The bureau also urged the media and public to avoid speculation, stressing that the purpose of the investigation is to improve aviation safety and prevent future accidents.
According to flight tracking data, Air India Flight AI-171’s last signal was received just seconds after takeoff at 1:38 PM local time. The aircraft reached an altitude of about 625 feet before crashing outside Ahmedabad airport. It had also issued a mayday call shortly before contact was lost.
Of the 242 people on board, only one passenger survived. The victims included 169 Indian nationals and 52 British nationals. In total, 260 people died, including 19 people on the ground, while another 67 people near the crash site were injured.
The sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, is a British national whose brother died in the accident. According to reports, Air India paid him £21,500 to support his wife and five-year-old son.
