The Reserve Bank of India has released the RBI October 2026 Bulletin, detailing ongoing resilience in domestic economic activity alongside research covering bank lending rate transmission, non-banking financial company (NBFC) performance, and state-level economic nowcasting. The publication contains two speeches, four analytical articles, and current economic statistics.

According to the “State of the Economy” review in the Bulletin, global conditions faced headwinds from renewed geopolitical tensions in West Asia, supply chain disruptions, and policy rate increases by major central banks. Elevated sovereign bond yields in advanced economies also heightened concerns over fiscal and financial stability. In contrast, high-frequency indicators across Indian industry and services reflected continued domestic expansion. Domestic headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rose in September, driven by increases across food, fuel, and core segments. On the external front, double-digit growth in merchandise exports during the first six months of 2026-27 narrowed the trade deficit, while foreign direct investment (FDI), external commercial borrowings (ECB), and remittances strengthened in August. Strong inflows via the FCNR(B) swap window further augmented foreign exchange reserves.

Lending Rate Transmission and Bank Credit Dynamics

A research paper authored by Yuvraj Kashyap, Kamal Gupta, and Arvind Jha evaluated how monetary policy shifts passed through to the fresh lending rates of scheduled commercial banks between February 2025 and March 2026. The authors decomposed variations in the weighted average lending rate (WALR) into interest rate and compositional effects using an index-number framework.

The study showed that in response to a cumulative 125-basis-point reduction in the policy repo rate, the WALR on fresh lending declined by 93 basis points. This overall decrease comprised an 80-basis-point interest rate effect and a 13-basis-point composition effect. The findings confirm that aggregate lending rate movements reflect both loan repricing and changes in credit distribution across banks and economic sectors.

NBFC Sector Performance and Emerging AI Applications

A comprehensive review of the NBFC sector up to end-December 2025, conducted by Pallavi Pant, Monalisa Poali, Abhyuday Harsh, Brijesh P, and Sona Chinngaihlian, showed sustained double-digit year-on-year credit growth. Asset quality across the sector continued to improve, evidenced by a steady downward trend in non-performing asset (NPA) ratios, though a moderate increase in bank borrowings signaled ongoing funding concentration. A text-mining analysis included in the study revealed that NBFCs are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence for customer and financial tools, data analytics, governance, and digital infrastructure.

Satellite and Search Data for State-Level Economic Nowcasting

Addressing the publication lag of annual Gross State Value Added (GSVA) releases, researchers Bipul Ghosh, Narendra Singh, and Sandhya Kuruganti demonstrated a high-frequency tracking framework using satellite-observed night-time lights and Google Trends search behaviour. Applied to Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, the combined geospatial and behavioural model yielded more accurate quarterly GSVA nowcasts than single-variable methods, facilitating earlier identification of regional turning points and economic shocks.

The Reserve Bank of India noted that the views expressed across the Bulletin articles belong entirely to the respective authors and do not represent the official views of the central bank.

Q1. What is the RBI October 2026 Bulletin? The RBI October 2026 Bulletin is a monthly publication by the Reserve Bank of India containing macroeconomic statistics, two official speeches, and four analytical articles on the Indian economy, monetary transmission, NBFCs, and state-level nowcasting.

Q2. How did bank lending rates change following repo rate reductions? Between February 2025 and March 2026, a 125-basis-point cut in the repo rate lowered scheduled commercial banks‘ fresh lending WALR by 93 basis points, driven by an 80-basis-point interest rate repricing effect and a 13-basis-point credit composition shift.

Q3. How did India‘s NBFC sector perform through December 2025? The NBFC sector recorded double-digit year-on-year credit expansion through end-December 2025, alongside falling NPA ratios, a moderate rise in bank borrowing concentration, and greater adoption of artificial intelligence in analytics and operations.

Q4. Which states were analysed in the RBI Bulletin’s economic nowcasting study? The nowcasting study applied satellite night-time lights and Google Trends search data to model quarterly Gross State Value Added growth for Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat.
