RBI forex reserves increased by $12.422 billion in the week ended August 21, 2026, reaching $729.328 billion, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s Weekly Statistical Supplement released on August 28. Total reserves rose by ₹1,39,552 crore during the week.
Foreign currency assets, the largest component of the reserves, increased by $9.482 billion to $591.333 billion. Gold reserves rose by $2.801 billion to $114.218 billion, while Special Drawing Rights increased by $112 million to $18.852 billion. The reserve position in the IMF also rose by $26 million to $4.925 billion.
Compared with the end of March 2026, total reserves were higher by $38.221 billion. On a year-on-year basis, reserves increased by $38.608 billion. Foreign currency assets were up $39.050 billion from the end of March and $9.082 billion from a year earlier.
Gold reserves stood ₹983 crore lower than their end-March level but were ₹3,49,253 crore higher year-on-year. SDRs increased by $231 million from the end of March and $2.916 billion over a year, while the IMF reserve position rose by $117 million and $193 million, respectively.
Bank Deposits, Credit and Money Supply
The RBI data showed aggregate deposits of scheduled commercial banks at ₹26,931,346 crore as of August 15, 2026. Deposits increased 14.7% year-on-year, while bank credit stood at ₹22,007,764 crore, showing 18.3% year-on-year growth.
Non-food credit was ₹21,893,628 crore, up ₹33,39,743 crore from a year earlier. Food credit stood at ₹1,14,136 crore, with year-on-year growth of ₹61,855 crore.
Money supply also increased. M3 stood at ₹32,294,503 crore as of August 15, up 14.2% year-on-year. Currency with the public rose 12.9% to ₹42,07,115 crore, while time deposits with banks increased 14.2% to ₹2,45,07,426 crore.
The RBI’s liquidity operations showed net absorption of ₹3,72,469 crore on August 17, which declined to ₹1,53,390 crore by August 23. Loans and advances to state governments stood at ₹10,788 crore on August 21, down ₹3,437 crore over the week and ₹16,675 crore year-on-year.
