Maldives and China Strengthen Ties Amidst Shift from India Focus

Maldives strengthens its ties with China while shifting focus from India, as reported by Reuters.

During his inaugural state visit to Beijing, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu upgraded the relationship between China and the Maldives. This came after Muizzu’s campaign highlighted India, China’s regional competitor, as a threat to Maldives’ sovereignty.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, addressing the media at the Great Hall of the People, referred to Muizzu as “a long-standing friend.” This move by China signifies potential increased investment in the Maldives, with both nations agreeing to a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.”

Xi conveyed to Muizzu, as mentioned by Chinese state media, that China and the Maldives are at a pivotal juncture to build upon their historical ties and look forward to a promising future.
