Tensions between the United States and Iran remain elevated despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, with Tehran rejecting Washington’s response to its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said the US response was not convincing and indicated that its proposals included demands such as lifting American sanctions.
US President Donald Trump described the recent US strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island as a minor attack, saying it targeted a newly built anti-aircraft facility. He said the operation was limited in scope and added that it was not a declaration of war. A US official also told Reuters that the strikes were limited.
However, reports from US media indicated that US Central Command had prepared plans for larger strikes against Iran, potentially beginning after the midterm elections. These reports have kept concerns about further military escalation alive.
Trump Says Iran War Will End on His Decision
Trump said the Iran conflict would end when he decided it was time, while acknowledging that the war may have contributed to Republican losses in the US midterm elections. He identified higher oil prices and rising gasoline and diesel costs as major sources of political pressure.
In an interview broadcast on Politico’s website on November 4, Trump said the US would consider further military action if an opportunity arose and it served American interests. Asked whether he would use nuclear weapons against Iran, he said there was no need to use them and claimed that US strikes had already destroyed 90% of Iran’s military strength.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei accused Washington of seeking regime change, weakening Iran and dividing the country. He alleged that the US had supported groups seeking to destabilise the Iranian government and warned that Washington and its regional partners would face consequences.
Oil Markets Watch Diplomacy and Risk of Further Escalation
Oil prices had fallen to their lowest level in more than three weeks amid hopes of de-escalation and progress in Qatar-led mediation between Washington and Tehran. Qatar said diplomatic efforts had made progress, although the rejection of the US response by Iran suggests that an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remains uncertain.
The waterway is a critical route for global energy shipments. Any prolonged disruption could affect crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, shipping costs and energy prices. Markets are therefore balancing hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough against the possibility of further military action.
Trump also said the United States would stop providing $4 billion in annual military aid to Israel after this year. His comments added another element of uncertainty to regional policy and were followed by a decline in oil prices.
