Geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia and Yemen continue to create uncertainty for global energy markets and maritime trade. Reports of tanker fires in the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi demands against Saudi Arabia and fresh US sanctions targeting an alleged India based Iran oil network have added to regional security concerns.
Brent crude moved above $95 per barrel during trading as investors monitored developments around important oil shipping routes.
Strait of Hormuz Incidents and US Sanctions on Indian Entities
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. It also claimed that its electronic warfare unit took control of two drones and landed them safely. Independent confirmation of these incidents was not provided.
Separately, the US Treasury sanctioned Chandigarh based businessman Suniel Kumar Sharma, his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid and nine India based entities over an alleged network involved in helping Iran evade oil trade restrictions.
The US alleges that the network provided fraudulent ship registrations and maritime certifications to vessels transporting Iranian petroleum. Two other Indian nationals, Ashwani Kumar Dhiman and Ishwinder Singh, were also identified in connection with businesses associated with the network.
The action was announced under Operation Economic Outcast, which aims to restrict Iran’s oil revenues.
Houthi Demands and Saudi Arabia‘s Regional Defence Cooperation
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have reportedly demanded $51 billion from Saudi Arabia as compensation for years of airstrikes and a prolonged blockade. The group has also sought formal Saudi recognition of its rule in Yemen.
The demands come amid negotiations aimed at ending hostilities and reports of Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.
Separately, Saudi Arabia and Syria signed a defence cooperation agreement between their defence ministries during a visit by Syria’s transitional government President Ahmad Shara to Riyadh. Details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
Saudi Arabia is also seeking offensive and defensive support from the United States, European countries and regional partners. The Saudi led coalition said its air defences intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Houthi forces towards the Medina region.
The developments keep attention on the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea, two strategically important routes for international energy shipments and global trade.
