India’s oil imports from Russia decreased in September 2025 but still accounted for roughly one-third of the country’s total crude oil purchases. This comes despite ongoing pressure from the United States to reduce these imports, which Washington says are helping fund Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Monthly and Yearly Data

According to Kpler Ltd., India imported 1.61 million barrels per day (mbpd) of Russian crude oil in September. This is a decline from 1.72 mbpd in August 2025. On a yearly basis, imports from Russia fell by 16%, which matches earlier industry projections shared in August.

Share in Total Crude Imports

Even with the decline, Russian oil still forms about one-third of India’s total crude oil shipments. This highlights Russia’s continued importance as a supplier for India despite global calls for reducing reliance on Russian energy.

Industry Insight

Experts say the reduction aligns with expectations as India diversifies its crude sourcing. However, Russian oil remains a key part of India’s energy strategy due to competitive pricing and supply stability.

Conclusion

In summary, India’s imports of Russian oil have fallen slightly but remain significant. The 16% year-on-year drop reflects a cautious approach in line with global pressures, while still maintaining Russia as a major supplier.
