Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses in Baltimore After Collision with Container Ship

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, which spans the Patapsco River, has collapsed following a collision with a large container ship.

An official reports that the ship which collided with the Baltimore bridge experienced a “power issue.”

Authorities have declared a mass casualty incident as emergency responders, including the Coast Guard and fire department, are mobilizing to the scene.

Reports indicate that over a dozen cars and numerous individuals may be in the water as a result of the bridge collapse.

Significant damage has been reported, with half of the bridge submerged in the water.

Maryland State Police AW-139 helicopters, with registration numbers N381MD (A46018) and N389MD (A47DD0), are aiding in rescue operations following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge near Baltimore. Reports from Baltimore County Fire radio indicate that seven construction workers and three civilian cars were believed to have been on the bridge at the time of the collapse and are currently missing.

An extensive response effort is in progress, involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Baltimore Police, Baltimore Fire Department, and various state agencies deploying rescue boats following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Reports suggest that over 20 vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the incident.
