Drone Incursions and Rocket Attacks Trigger Red Alerts and Explosions in Northern Israel

Lebanese Hezbollah recently launched drone attacks on Israeli coastal towns Nahariya and Mazre. These strikes resulted in five civilian injuries, with one fatality and another person in serious condition. The drones used were smaller, electric-powered devices rather than the Iranian “Shaheds,” and were observed approaching from the sea in pairs. Their shape and the lack of characteristic noise helped identify them as different from Iranian models.

Despite the activation of air raid sirens in northern Israel, the missile defense systems, including the Iron Dome, were unable to intercept the drones due to their extremely low flight altitudes. This suggests that if a larger number of more powerful drones had been employed, the damage could have been significantly greater.

The incident highlights a long-standing issue for the IDF: the inefficiency of using Iron Dome missiles to intercept each UAV, especially amid ongoing missile threats. Currently, there are no cannon systems available for this type of threat, prompting the IDF to potentially reactivate M163 self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and establish mobile rifle units to better address such attacks in the future.
