U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a 50-minute conversation on Wednesday, during which they discussed issues such as fentanyl smuggling and trade. A source close to the conversation revealed that teams from both countries would continue their talks later in the day, though no further details were provided.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Vice President JD Vance also participated in the call.
Trump later shared his thoughts on the call through a post on Truth Social. He mentioned that Trudeau had reached out to discuss potential solutions to the ongoing tariff issues. Trump told him that the problem of fentanyl smuggling through the Canadian and Mexican borders has not been adequately addressed, and despite Trudeau’s claims of improvement, Trump said it wasn’t enough. He also pointed out that Trudeau could not provide information on the timing of Canada’s next election, raising suspicions about Trudeau’s motives. Trump suggested that the Canadian leader might be using the situation to maintain his political power.

Trump further criticized Trudeau’s border policies, claiming they allowed large amounts of fentanyl and illegal immigration into the U.S., contributing to the deaths of many people. He emphasized that these policies were largely to blame for the current challenges between the two nations.
