The U.S. military intensified its campaign against Iran on July 20, with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirming another round of strikes at 9 p.m. ET. The operation targeted Iranian military command centers, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defense systems to reduce Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier the same day, at 4 p.m. ET, U.S. forces launched a fresh wave of strikes under the direction of President Donald Trump. CENTCOM said the operation was aimed at further degrading Iranian military capabilities used in attacks on commercial shipping. The U.S. military also said personnel aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) continue supporting flight operations from the Arabian Sea as it enforces the naval blockade against Iran. As of July 20, the U.S. military had redirected seven commercial vessels and disabled one vessel to prevent ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports.
CENTCOM said commercial shipping continues through the Strait of Hormuz despite the conflict. Since early May, U.S. forces have helped facilitate the transit of about 900 commercial vessels carrying approximately 450 million barrels of crude oil. The command added that American forces remain prepared to respond to any Iranian aggression against civilian vessels using the strategic waterway.
On July 20, the U.S. State Department issued a global security alert, warning of increased risks due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The advisory urged U.S. citizens in the region to remain highly vigilant and prepare for possible flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures, and other travel disruptions. It also warned that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including locations outside the Middle East, as well as U.S. interests and citizens worldwide, could be targeted by Iran and its proxies.
According to Fox News, senior U.S. officials said President Trump is expected to decide within days whether to broaden military action against Iran and resume full-scale operations, although no final decision has been made. Officials said any renewed campaign would be significantly larger than the nine-night airstrike operation that began on July 7 and mainly targeted Iranian military assets linked to activity around the Strait of Hormuz. One official said U.S. forces have largely avoided strikes near Tehran or against Iranian nuclear facilities so far, but that could change if full-scale operations are approved.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said about one hour earlier that two oil tankers attempting to transit a hazardous route south of the Strait of Hormuz, allegedly after U.S. misdirection, suffered explosions and fires and were forced to stop, with rescue teams evacuating their crews. Separately, U.S. officials said multiple Iranian strikes on U.S. bases in the Middle East since July 7 have injured nearly 100 U.S. service members. Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell said 96% of those injured have already returned to duty, with the vast majority suffering mild concussions and actively returning to combat roles.
