Social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has released its first transparency report since being rebranded by Elon Musk. This report covers the first half of 2024, detailing the actions taken by the platform to address user complaints and policy violations.
Between January and June 2024, X suspended approximately 5.29 million accounts and either labeled or deleted 10.6 million posts that were found to be in violation of the company’s policies.
Key Findings from the Report:
1. Account Suspensions:
Over 5.29 million accounts were suspended, with the majority of these suspensions linked to violations of the platform’s standards on abusive behavior, harassment, and illegal goods and services.
2. Posts Removed:
X deleted or labeled 10.6 million posts during the same period, addressing a wide range of content violations including hate speech, child safety, misinformation, and more.
3. Policy Violations:
The platform took significant action against violations related to abuse and harassment, leading to the suspension of more than 1.1 million accounts and the deletion of over 26.48 million posts. Additionally, X suspended 514,000 accounts for involvement in illegal goods and services and removed over 549,000 posts associated with these violations.
Comparison with Previous Data:
In a blog post from April 2023, the company had revealed that during the first half of 2022, they found 6.5 million posts violating its policies, a 29% increase compared to the second half of 2021. During that period, around 1.6 million accounts were suspended. This marks a noticeable increase in both account suspensions and post removals in 2024.
Breakdown of Actions by Policy Area:
Child Safety, Nudity, and Hate Speech:
X took strict action against content violating its policies on child safety, nudity, hate speech, violent content, and self-harm. These violations accounted for a large portion of the content removed from the platform.
Misleading Identities and Misinformation:
Another significant area of concern was the misuse of identities and misinformation, which prompted the suspension of numerous accounts.
Platform’s Commitment to Transparency:
The transparency report is part of X’s broader commitment to ensuring user safety and maintaining policy standards on the platform. The platform reviews user complaints and makes decisions based on its policy standards, often taking swift action to suspend accounts or remove content that violates guidelines.
As X continues to refine its approach to content moderation and safety, these transparency reports offer a clear insight into the company’s efforts to combat harmful content and promote a safer online environment.
This report marks a significant milestone under Elon Musk’s leadership, as the platform works to uphold its policies in an evolving digital landscape.
