Wernher von Braun, a German rocket scientist who later worked with the U.S. space program, wrote a science fiction book in 1953 called Project Mars: A Technical Tale. In this novel, he described a Martian government where the leader was given the title “Elon.” This has recently caught attention due to the similarity with Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, who plans to colonize Mars.

The name “Elon” in von Braun’s book was not a prediction of Musk, but simply a title for the Martian leader, similar to “president” or “governor.” The leader is elected for five years, and the title “Elon” is used to represent authority in the fictional Martian government.
Many people have found this coincidence amusing, especially as Musk has shared his Mars colonization goals. Some social media users even jokingly call it a prophecy or destiny. However, it’s important to note that von Braun’s use of “Elon” was not meant to predict Musk specifically, but just a part of his imagined future for Mars.
Von Braun’s legacy is significant, given his contributions to rocket technology and his work on the V-2 rocket program during Nazi Germany, followed by his involvement in the U.S. space program. His book reflects his lifelong interest in space exploration and the possibility of human missions to Mars.
As Musk continues to advance space exploration, the connection between his plans and von Braun’s fictional Martian government has been revisited, but it remains just a curious coincidence, not a true prediction of Musk’s role in Mars missions.
