USA Restricts China’s Access to AI and Quantum Computing Technology
In its first major move under the Donald Trump administration, the United States has placed dozens of Chinese technology firms on its export blacklist. This decision is part of a broader strategy to limit Beijing’s progress in artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and quantum technologies.
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced the addition of 80 entities to its “entity list,” with more than 50 from China. American companies are now barred from supplying these entities without obtaining special government permits.
Why Were These Chinese Firms Blacklisted?
The U.S. government stated that these companies were acting against national security and foreign policy interests. The move aims to curb China’s advancements in exascale computing—a technology capable of processing massive amounts of data at extremely high speeds—and quantum computing.
27 entities were blacklisted for allegedly acquiring U.S.-origin technology to support China’s military modernization.
Seven companies were added for aiding China’s quantum technology research.
Two firms were accused of supplying restricted technologies to Huawei and its chip-making affiliate, HiSilicon.
China Strongly Condemns U.S. Sanctions
China’s Foreign Ministry firmly opposed and strongly condemned the latest U.S. restrictions, urging Washington to reconsider its stance.
China’s Response:
On U.S. Trade Blacklist: Urged the U.S. to stop using national security as a broad excuse to suppress Chinese companies.
On U.S. Military & Cybersecurity Report: Criticized the U.S. for its “hegemonic mentality” in viewing China as a top security threat.
On Taiwan: Called for an end to U.S. support for Taiwan independence activities.
U.S.-China Tech War Continues
This move is the latest escalation in the ongoing U.S.-China tech conflict, where the U.S. has been actively restricting Chinese access to advanced technologies, especially in AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors. As tensions rise, Beijing is likely to take countermeasures, further intensifying the global tech rivalry.
