The US government has issued an export control directive on national security grounds, requiring Anthropic to immediately suspend access to its AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals worldwide. The restriction also applies to foreign employees working at Anthropic.
Anthropic said it received the government directive at 5:21 PM ET on June 12. The company stated that the letter did not provide written details explaining the national security concerns behind the order.
According to Anthropic, the government believes it has identified a method to bypass or “jailbreak” Fable 5. Anthropic said it reviewed a demonstration of the technique and found it only exposed a small number of previously known and relatively minor software vulnerabilities.
The company said the government has so far provided only verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non universal jailbreak. Anthropic described the technique as essentially asking the model to analyze a specific codebase and identify software flaws.
Anthropic argued that the capabilities shown through the reported jailbreak are already widely available in other public AI models, including GPT 5.5, and are regularly used by cybersecurity professionals to improve software security.
The company emphasized that extensive testing was conducted before Fable 5’s release, including thousands of hours of red teaming by US government agencies, UK safety organizations, third party firms, and internal teams. Anthropic said no testers have discovered a universal jailbreak capable of broadly bypassing the model’s safeguards.
Anthropic also stated that perfect jailbreak resistance is likely impossible for any AI provider. It said its strategy has been to make jailbreaks either very limited or difficult to execute, while using monitoring systems and data retention policies to quickly detect and address potential abuses.
While complying with the directive, Anthropic strongly disagreed with the government’s decision. The company said a narrow potential jailbreak should not be enough to force the recall of commercial AI models already used by hundreds of millions of people. Anthropic warned that applying such a standard across the industry could effectively halt future frontier AI model deployments. AWS confirmed that Anthropic requested the removal of Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 access across all regions, while all other Anthropic models remain available.
