The unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed individuals within the total workforce. According to the latest annual report from the Labour Force Survey, the unemployment rate in India remained stable over the past year. From July 2023 to June 2024, the unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 and above held steady at 3.2%.
Unemployment: Stable for a Year
The report highlights that there was no significant increase in the unemployment rate during the period mentioned. For men, the unemployment rate saw a slight year-on-year (YoY) decline, dropping from 3.3% to 3.2%. On the other hand, women experienced a small rise in unemployment, with their rate increasing from 2.9% to 3.2%.
Labour Force Participation Rises
During the period from July 2023 to June 2024, the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and above was 60.1%, up from 57.9% in the previous year. For men, the LFPR stood at 78.8%, while for women, it increased from 37.0% in the previous year to 41.7%.
Increase in Working Women
One of the most notable findings from the report is the rise in the Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which measures the percentage of employed individuals within the eligible population. The overall WPR for the 15+ age group increased to 58.2%, up from 56.0% in the previous year. For men, the WPR was 76.3%, while for women, it rose from 35.9% to 40.3%.
This increase in the number of working women is a positive sign, indicating more women are entering the workforce. The WPR for women aged 15 and above increased to 40.3%, reflecting a growing trend of female employment in the country.
In summary, while India’s unemployment rate remained stable over the past year, the country witnessed a positive trend in terms of increased female workforce participation, marking progress toward a more balanced labor market.
