Trump Criticizes NBC and ABC, Calls for FCC to Revoke Licenses

US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized NBC and ABC, describing them as “two of the worst and most biased networks in history.” Trump made these statements in a Truth Social post on Sunday, where he called for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to revoke their television licenses due to what he sees as unfair and dishonest coverage.

Trump’s Accusations Against Major Networks

In his lengthy post, Trump claimed that NBC and ABC produce “97% bad stories” about him, even though he described his popularity as “very high” and his presidency as having “among the greatest 8 months in presidential history.” He further said, “If that is the case, they are simply an arm of the Democrat Party and should, according to many, have their licenses revoked by the FCC. I would be totally in favor of that because they are so biased and untruthful, an actual threat to our democracy!”

Trump also argued that these networks should pay millions of dollars in license fees for access to public airwaves and suggested revoking their licenses over “unfair coverage of Republicans and Conservatives.”

FCC and Broadcasting Licenses

The FCC is responsible for issuing and renewing licenses to television station owners in the United States. These licenses must be regularly renewed, and the FCC considers public interest and compliance with regulations during the process.

While the FCC can revoke licenses, it is rare and typically requires proof of serious violations of broadcast rules. The process is independent and protects freedom of the press under the First Amendment.

Recent Legal Disputes with Media Outlets

Trump’s remarks come shortly after major legal settlements with top media companies. In July, Trump reached a $16 million settlement with CBS News. This occurred just before the FCC approved the merger between CBS parent company Paramount Global and Skydance Media.

Trump also settled a $15 million defamation case with ABC, reflecting ongoing tensions between the former president and major media outlets.

Political Reactions and Ongoing Debate

Critics have expressed concern about the suggestion to revoke licenses based on perceived bias, calling it a potential threat to press freedom. Supporters claim tougher action against media bias is necessary for a fair democracy.

The issue remains part of a wider debate about media accountability and the role of journalism in society.
