The Trump administration has asked the US Supreme Court to support its decision to impose tariffs on India for buying Russian energy. In a 251-page appeal, it said the tariffs were approved under emergency powers to respond to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The filing described them as an important part of the President’s plan to push for peace in the conflict.
The appeal also claimed the policy is working internationally. It said six major US trading partners, along with the European Union, have accepted new tariff arrangements that benefit the US, and together these deals promise nearly $2 trillion in purchases and investments.
By linking the tariffs to both peace efforts in Ukraine and stronger economic growth at home, the administration urged the court to keep the President’s authority. It warned that removing this power would weaken America’s position and undo progress already made.
A US appeals court, in a 7–4 ruling, said Trump wrongly used emergency powers to impose global tariffs, noting IEEPA doesn’t allow such duties. However, the tariffs stay in place as the case may go to the Supreme Court.
