U.S. President Donald Trump has officially announced that a 25% tariff will be imposed on all goods imported from Japan and South Korea starting August 1, 2025. This strong move comes in response to what the U.S. calls “unfair trade practices and large trade deficits” with both countries.

In letters sent to Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, President Trump stated that the U.S. has repeatedly raised concerns about the non-reciprocal trade relationship it shares with both nations. Despite long discussions, Trump said that trade barriers, tariffs, and unfair policies by Japan and Korea have continued to hurt U.S. interests.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Sunday that he won’t “easily compromise” in trade talks with the U.S., calling the discussions difficult. This comes after Donald Trump threatened to impose 30–35% tariffs on Japanese goods, saying the current trade deal is unfair and that he plans to send a letter demanding payment.
Why the Tariffs?
The letters mention:
Massive trade deficits the U.S. has with Japan and South Korea.
Lack of fair access to Japanese and Korean markets for American companies.
Goods being routed through third countries to avoid existing tariffs.
To address this, the U.S. will charge a flat 25% tariff on any and all products from Japan and South Korea — separate from sector-specific tariffs.
No More Delays in Trade Deals
Trump emphasized that American companies face unnecessary delays and red tape when trying to do business in Japan or South Korea. “We will no longer tolerate this,” the letters say, calling for quick, professional approvals from both countries.
Open to Negotiation
The final page of the letter signals that if Japan or South Korea remove their trade barriers, the U.S. may reconsider or adjust the tariff rate. However, until they do, the U.S. stands firm on its decision.
Trump ended the letters by stating:
> “This deficit is a major threat to our economy and, indeed, our National Security.”
