Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), owned by Mukesh Ambani, has filed a request to trademark the term “Operation Sindoor.” The application was submitted on May 7 to the Trade Marks Registry. RIL wants to use this name for educational and entertainment purposes, as covered under Class 41 of trademark categories.
The term “Operation Sindoor” refers to a military action by the Indian Armed Forces. The operation took place on the night between May 6 and 7. It targeted terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This military move came shortly after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, where 25 Indian citizens and one person from Nepal lost their lives.
Apart from Reliance, three other people have also applied to register the same name—Mukesh Chetram Agrawal, retired Group Captain Kamal Singh Oberoi, and Alok Kothari.
The Trade Marks Registry is reviewing all the applications. They will also look into whether using a name linked to a military operation could confuse the public or appear to be officially connected to the government.
Right now, the name is not officially registered, and the approval process is still ongoing.
Update: Reliance Withdraws Trademark Application for ‘Operation Sindoor’
Reliance Industries has clarified that it has no plans to trademark the term “Operation Sindoor,” a phrase that now represents Indian courage and bravery. The company stated that the trademark application was mistakenly filed by a junior team member without proper approval and has now been officially withdrawn.
Reliance expressed deep respect and pride for Operation Sindoor, a mission launched in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam backed by Pakistan. The company praised the Indian Armed Forces for their bravery and stated that it fully supports the government and the military in the fight against terrorism. Reliance also reaffirmed its strong belief in the motto ‘India First’.
