India’s PLFS August 2026 data showed a further rise in labour force participation, with the overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for people aged 15 years and above increasing to 55.6% from 55.4% in July. The latest figures were released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on September 15, 2026.
The overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR) also improved to 52.8% in August from 52.5% in July, marking its highest level since March 2026. The improvement was driven by rural areas, while urban WPR remained unchanged.
Rural labour participation strengthens
Rural LFPR increased to 58.2% in August from 58.0% in July. On a year-on-year basis, rural LFPR was up 1.2 percentage points from 57.0% in August 2025. Urban LFPR, however, remained at 50.4% during August.
Female labour force participation also increased. Overall female LFPR rose to 34.8% from 34.4% in July, with rural female LFPR climbing to 39.4% from 38.8%. Urban female LFPR was broadly stable at 25.4%.
Compared with August 2025, overall female LFPR increased by 1.1 percentage points. Rural female LFPR rose by 2 percentage points to 39.4%, while urban female LFPR declined by 0.7 percentage point to 25.4%.
Rural unemployment falls to 4.1%
The overall unemployment rate (UR) for people aged 15 years and above edged down to 5.0% in August from 5.1% in July. Rural UR saw a sharper decline, falling to 4.1% from 4.5%, while urban UR was broadly stable at 6.8%.
The 4.1% rural unemployment rate was the lowest recorded since January 2026. Compared with August 2025, rural UR declined by 0.2 percentage point from 4.3%.
The decline was visible across rural genders. Rural male UR fell to 4.3% from 4.6% in July, while rural female UR declined to 3.9% from 4.3%. Overall male UR fell to 4.9%, while overall female UR declined to 5.1%.
The August estimates were based on information collected from 3,70,160 people across India, including 2,11,353 respondents in rural areas and 1,58,807 in urban areas. The PLFS follows the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach for its monthly labour market indicators.
