Myanmar Junta Seeks Urgent Aid After Devastating 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake

A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, prompting the ruling junta to declare a state of emergency in six regions—Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, northeastern Shan State, Naypyidaw, and Bago. The rare move highlights the severity of the disaster, as the military government, which usually avoids seeking external help, has now appealed for urgent international humanitarian aid.

Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing was seen visiting a hospital in Naypyidaw where injured people were being treated. Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun emphasized the immediate need for global assistance and urged blood donations for patients in Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Sagaing. While the exact casualty figures remain unknown, the government’s plea for aid suggests significant damage and loss.

Update

AFP reports that the death toll from Myanmar’s earthquake has surpassed 1,000, citing the country’s junta regime.
