Long Beach, California, has officially declared a public health emergency in response to a recent tuberculosis outbreak. The outbreak has resulted in the death of one individual and the hospitalization of nine others. These cases are primarily concentrated among residents of a single-room occupancy hotel within the city.
According to city officials from the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, the risk of exposure to the general public is considered low. The outbreak is largely contained within a specific demographic characterized by significant barriers to healthcare access. This includes individuals experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, mental illness, substance abuse issues, and serious medical comorbidities.
As of April 29, a total of 14 cases have been confirmed in connection with the outbreak. Despite the severity of the situation, the city has opted not to disclose the name of the hotel at the center of the outbreak, citing concerns for patient privacy.
Efforts are currently underway to identify and screen individuals who may have been exposed to the tuberculosis bacteria. Health officials have identified approximately 170 individuals who may have had contact with infected persons and are in the process of being screened for the disease. It is anticipated that the number of cases and potential exposures will increase as investigations progress.
Those identified with either active tuberculosis disease or latent tuberculosis infection will be provided with appropriate treatment and care. Given the scale of the outbreak and the need for extensive outreach and engagement efforts, significant resources are required to effectively contain it.
By declaring a public health emergency, the city aims to streamline the allocation of resources and facilitate additional actions to contain the outbreak swiftly. This includes intensified outreach efforts, expanded screening procedures, and enhanced support services for affected individuals and communities.
