India has approved power exports to Nepal for 18 hours a day from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours, covering the period from September 13 to December 31, 2026. The Ministry of Power has cleared the supply to the Nepal Electricity Authority following recent floods that damaged hydropower infrastructure in Nepal.
Up to 654MW approved through two transmission lines
Under the approval, India can export up to 600MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV D/c line. A further 54MW can be supplied through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV S/c line.
This takes the approved export capacity across the two transmission routes to up to 654MW during the specified period.
The quantum of electricity to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026, according to the Ministry of Power.
Flood damage increases Nepal’s electricity requirement
Recent floods have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, reducing the country’s domestic electricity generation capacity. The resulting shortfall has created an additional requirement for power.
The approved exports are intended to help the Nepal Electricity Authority meet its electricity requirements during the difficult period. The decision also supports continued energy cooperation between India and Nepal.
