India is preparing to bid for the 2030 Youth Olympics, positioning itself as a strong contender among countries like Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Thailand, Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are also in the race for hosting rights. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced India’s intentions on Sunday during the Olympic Council of Asia’s 44th General Assembly held in New Delhi.
This bid marks a significant step in India’s larger goal of eventually hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are going to bid for the 2030 Youth Olympics, but our main focus remains on hosting the 2036 Olympics,” Mandaviya said. He emphasized India’s capability to organize major international sporting events, citing the successful hosting of cricket World Cups and the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the past.
The 2030 Youth Olympics will be the fifth edition of the event, which serves as a platform for young athletes from around the world to showcase their talent. India aims to leverage its growing influence in global sports and its infrastructure to present a compelling case for hosting the event.
If India secures the bid, it would further bolster the country’s global sporting image and could lay the groundwork for future Olympic bids, particularly for the 2036 Olympics. The final decision on the host nation will be taken after a detailed review of the bids submitted by the competing countries.
India’s efforts to host international sporting events reflect its commitment to nurturing talent and promoting sports on a global stage. The success of India’s bid for the 2030 Youth Olympics could potentially pave the way for even more significant global sporting events in the country.
