Google Maps will soon rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” in the United States, following an update to the U.S. Geographic Names System. The change, announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, will be visible to users in the U.S. However, in Mexico, the body of water will still be called the “Gulf of Mexico.” Outside these two countries, both names will be displayed.

The name change comes after the Trump administration’s Interior Department officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and reverted the name of Alaska’s Denali peak back to Mount McKinley. These updates were part of a series of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump shortly after taking office last Monday, fulfilling a campaign promise.

“From now on, the Gulf of Mexico will be recognized as the Gulf of America, and North America’s tallest peak will once again be called Mount McKinley,” the Interior Department said in a statement.

Google Maps, owned by Alphabet, confirmed it would adopt the new names for both locations in alignment with the government directive.
