Ford Motor has taken a significant step in enhancing the charging capabilities of its electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States and Canada by allowing owners to access Tesla’s Supercharging network for faster charging. This move aims to address the growing demand for efficient charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. However, with the anticipated high demand, there might be initial supply constraints for the non-Tesla adapters required for compatibility.
In a strategic move, Ford has decided not to incur charges from Tesla for this service, providing the adapters at no cost to EV owners until June. Post that period, starting July 1, 2024, the adapters will be available for purchase at $230. This proactive approach aligns with Ford’s commitment to promoting sustainable mobility and catering to the evolving needs of electric vehicle users.
Specifically, the announcement highlights that Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E customers can now leverage Tesla superchargers, significantly expanding their charging options. This integration provides access to over 15,000 Tesla superchargers, effectively more than doubling the charging network available to Ford’s EV customers.
AutoForecast Solutions predicts that Tesla could generate annual charging revenue ranging from $6 billion to $12 billion by 2030 if it opens its charging stations to non-Tesla EV drivers. This strategy is similar to the agreement with General Motors, allowing GM customers access to over 12,000 Tesla fast chargers. Despite potential fluctuations in electric vehicle adoption, even with a smaller fleet than initially anticipated, Tesla may still see substantial revenue growth from its expanded charging business.
Furthermore, Ford plans to support its electric vehicle customers on the BlueOval charging network by offering the Fast Charge Adapter free of charge until June 30, 2024. This adapter is crucial for charging Ford vehicles on the upgraded Tesla chargers. Looking ahead, Ford aims to simplify the charging experience by introducing next-generation electric vehicles equipped with the integrated North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, eliminating the need for adapters to access Tesla superchargers. This strategic move reflects Ford’s dedication to fostering a seamless and accessible charging infrastructure for the growing community of electric vehicle enthusiasts.

Following a recent software update, Rivian owners are now able to utilize Tesla Superchargers. This integration, initially revealed last year, aligns with Rivian’s strategy to embrace Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). As part of this initiative, Rivian is offering complimentary NACS adapters made by Tesla to its customers. Tesla’s well-established standard, renowned for its reliability, boasts a global presence with over 55,000 Supercharger stations. This collaboration between Rivian and Tesla contributes to the growing number of major automakers adopting NACS, supporting the broader effort to standardize electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The adapters will be provided at no cost, reminiscent of Ford’s recent action as it shifts towards the NACS charging standard. Rivian plans to distribute one complimentary adapter per customer, determined by the vehicle’s VIN number. The company has not disclosed whether this offer is for a limited time or the pricing for additional adapters. By way of comparison, Ford intends to start charging $230 for such adapters starting in July.
