FADA December 2024 Vehicle Sales Report: Declines Across Most Segments, Optimism for January 2025

FADA December 2024 Vehicle Sales Report: Declines Across Most Segments, Optimism for January 2025

Automobile retail sales grew 9% year-on-year in 2024, driven by strong demand for two-wheelers and passenger vehicles despite a challenging business environment, according to dealers’ body FADA. However, retail sales in December declined by 12%.

Overall vehicle registrations reached 2,61,07,679 units in 2024, up from 2,39,28,293 units in 2023, marking a 9% increase.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has shared vehicle retail data for December 2024, showing a significant decline across most categories:

– Overall Retail: Sales dropped by 12.4% compared to December 2023, signaling a tough end to the year for the auto industry.

– Two-Wheelers (2W): Sales in this segment fell sharply by 17.6%. As two-wheelers are often a key indicator of consumer sentiment in rural areas, this drop highlights economic pressures or changing buying patterns.

– Three-Wheelers (3W): Sales decreased by 4.5%. This decline could be due to competition from electric alternatives and new urban transport policies.

– Passenger Vehicles (PV): Passenger vehicle sales saw a smaller dip of 1.9%, indicating cautious spending by consumers or fewer first-time buyers in the market.

– Commercial Vehicles (CV): Sales of commercial vehicles were down by 5.2%. The reduction could be tied to economic uncertainties that have impacted investments in new fleets.

– Tractors: Tractor sales were a bright spot, with a 25.7% increase. The growth could be linked to strong agricultural performance and government incentives for farm equipment.

Outlook for January 2025

The near-term outlook for January 2025 shows mixed sentiment among dealers:

– Dealer Expectations: About 48% of dealers are optimistic and expect sales growth in January. Meanwhile, 41% believe sales will stay flat, and nearly 11% predict a decline.

– Two-Wheelers: Sales may recover due to better rural incomes, supported by an improved Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. However, the growing popularity of electric vehicles continues to challenge traditional two-wheeler sales.

– Commercial Vehicles: This segment might see slight growth, driven by ongoing infrastructure projects and easier access to credit, which could boost business investments.

– Passenger Vehicles: New model launches, festive demand during the marriage season, and promotional offers are likely to improve sales. However, potential price hikes might deter some buyers.

Summary

December 2024 was a challenging month for most vehicle categories, with tractors being the only segment to show significant growth. The industry is cautiously optimistic for January 2025, with seasonal demand, policy changes, and infrastructure projects expected to provide some support. However, the broader economic environment and the transition to electric vehicles remain key challenges.
