Chinese automaker BYD, known for its budget-friendly electric vehicles (EVs), is expanding into the luxury market with its new high-end supercar, the Yangwang U9. The car, priced at $233,400, has made waves after a video was released showing its ability to “jump” over obstacles.

The video, posted on BYD’s Weibo account on Monday, shows the autonomously driven Yangwang U9 accelerating to 120 km/h. It then uses its advanced suspension system to leap six meters forward, successfully clearing a pothole, road spikes, and a chalk flag.

Although BYD is widely recognized for its affordable EVs, such as the $10,000 Seagull, the company is now introducing luxury vehicles like the U9. Released in February 2024, the U9 has an impressive top speed of 192 mph and can accelerate from 0 to 62 km/h in just 2.36 seconds. It also features rapid charging, allowing it to go from 30% to 80% battery in just 10 minutes.

One of the standout features of the U9 is its DiSus-X intelligent suspension system, which allows the car to perform impressive stunts. In addition to jumping over obstacles, the car can “dance” to music and even drive on three wheels, as seen in its launch demonstration last year.

The Yangwang brand represents BYD’s move into the luxury segment. Alongside the U9, the company also launched the Yangwang U8 hybrid SUV in April 2023. The U8 is packed with unique features like an onboard drone and the ability to float on water for short periods.

While BYD’s high-end models are generating excitement, the company remains a strong competitor to Tesla with its affordable EVs and hybrids. Earlier this month, BYD reported record annual sales and revealed plans to expand into new markets. In fact, nearly 5,000 of its electric vehicles are being shipped to Europe aboard a custom-built container vessel.
