Trump Stands Firm on China Trade Deal, Says Market Pain Is Necessary for Long-Term Fix

President Trump said he will not agree to any trade deal with China unless China takes steps to fix the trade imbalance between the two countries. He made it clear that the U.S. is looking for a fair and balanced trade relationship. When asked about the impact of the ongoing trade tensions on the stock markets, Trump responded by saying, “Sometimes you have to take your medicine.” He meant that even if the markets face some short-term pain, it is necessary to go through it in order to fix long-term problems in trade.

President Trump said he is not trying to deliberately cause a market selloff. He mentioned that he has spoken with leaders from Europe and Asia about tariffs. Trump also said that China’s large trade surplus with the U.S. cannot continue, calling it unsustainable. When asked about the future of the markets, he said he cannot predict what will happen.

President Trump said that one day people will understand that tariffs are actually a very good thing for the United States.
