Trump Slaps 21% Tariff on Mexican Tomatoes to Protect U.S. Farmers

Trump’s administration has announced new tariffs of nearly 21% on most tomatoes imported from Mexico, starting July 14. The decision comes after the U.S. Commerce Department withdrew from a trade agreement that it says failed to shield American tomato farmers from unfair competition.

The department stated that this move is aimed at giving U.S. tomato growers a fair chance in the market by curbing the impact of cheaper Mexican imports. The new tariff is expected to raise prices on Mexican tomatoes and potentially shift market dynamics in favor of domestic producers.
