U.S. President Donald Trump has once again criticized the Federal Reserve and its chairman Jerome Powell. Speaking ahead of the Fed’s rate decision, Trump said that if interest rates were lowered, the government could buy debt at much cheaper prices. He believes rates should be cut by at least two percentage points and claimed Powell has done a poor job, adding that a rate cut is unlikely today.
Trump also joked about appointing himself to lead the Fed, saying, “Maybe I should appoint myself at the Fed, can I do that?”
Outlining his own approach, Trump said he would first go very short term to bring rates down quickly and then shift to long-term debt.
