U.S. President Donald Trump says he personally stopped a major military strike that could have killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the recent conflict between Israel and Iran.
In a lengthy social media post, President Trump said he knew Khamenei’s exact location and chose not to authorize a strike by the U.S. or Israel. “I saved him from a very ugly and dishonorable death,” Trump wrote. “He doesn’t have to say, ‘Thank you, President Trump,’ but he knows it.”
Trump strongly criticized Khamenei for publicly declaring victory over Israel, calling the statement “a lie” and pointing to what he described as massive destruction inside Iran.
“Iran has been decimated,” Trump said. “Their three nuclear sites were obliterated, the military is in ruins, the economy is broken, and death is all around them.”
He revealed that, at the final stages of the war, he ordered Israel to recall a large group of warplanes headed toward Tehran, calling it “the biggest attack of the war, by far.” Trump said the strike would have caused “tremendous damage” and many civilian casualties.
Trump also stated he had been working on easing economic sanctions on Iran in an effort to help the country recover, but halted those plans after Khamenei responded with “anger, hatred, and disgust.”
“Iran must return to the global order,” Trump warned. “They are always angry and hostile—and look at what it has brought them: a burned-out country with no future.”
The President ended his message by urging Iran’s leadership to choose diplomacy. “You often get more with honey than you do with vinegar. Peace!”
